Architecture Makes is an exhibition developed as part of the 60th anniversary of architectural education at the University of Newcastle. It explores the expansive possibilities of an architectural education and the many ways architectural thinking shapes our world.
Architecture is often understood through the buildings it produces. Yet an architectural education can inform work across architectural practice, research, government, policy, advocacy, education, environmental stewardship, cultural production and community engagement. Through the work of graduates practising locally, nationally and internationally, the exhibition explores architecture as a way of thinking, making and acting in the world.
Six themes
The exhibition is organised around six interconnected themes: Architecture Makes Buildings, Futures, Knowledges, Communities, Cultures and Places.
These themes are overlapping threads rather than discrete categories. Together, they reflect the School's commitments to social equity, regionalism and Country, while celebrating the diversity of architectural practice and its capacity to respond to contemporary challenges.
This website
The website extends the exhibition beyond the gallery. QR codes beside each work lead to its project page, with further images, practitioner details, interviews and links. For those who cannot visit, it is a public digital exhibition — and, after the exhibition closes, a lasting record of the projects, practitioners and ideas presented for the School's 60th anniversary.
